According to Statistics Finland’s wage structure statistics, the median wage of men exceeded the median wage of women at all levels of education by about 10–30 per cent.

Higher wage levels were achieved with degrees favored by men. For example, according to Statistics Finland, the median earnings of those with a bachelor’s degree show a clear upward trend according to the proportion of men with a certain degree.

Differences in total earnings between the sexes are also affected by other factors, such as career length or the amount of bonuses and overtime related to working time, Statistics Finland states.

Examined by level of education, the highest total earnings were achieved by employees with a postgraduate degree, with a median earnings of EUR 5,057.

By 2020 Wage structure statistics describe the earnings data of about 1.4 million full-time employees and a total of 1.7 million full-time and part-time earnings data.

Wage structure statistics describe all employees in the public sector and employees in companies with more than five employees in the private sector. The statistics do not take into account the top management of private sector companies.

In addition to regular working hours, total earnings include all wage supplements and fringe benefits. They do not include non-recurring salary items, such as performance bonuses or holiday pay.
