Working life Baywatch-minded beach rescuers lured to work inland in Nurmijärvi – Municipality explains what a strange recruitment campaign is all about

The municipality of Nurmijärvi attracts shore rescuers to summer jobs: mustaches and busts are a plus.

Is there do you have pilot glasses? Breast hair? Mustache?

If you have all of them, you are well suited for summer jobs as a beach lifeguard in Nurmijärvi. Or you can get such a picture from a recruitment video made by the municipality of Nurmijärvi.

Video the purpose is to attract shore rescuers to summer jobs at the beaches of Sääm and Tiira in Nurmijärvi. In the video, a beach lion dressed in pilot goggles and a Baywatch-style outfit runs in a snowdrift to rescue avant-garde swimmers. The beach lion is an actor from Nurmijärvi Timo Lavikainen.

Making a recruiting video for a workplace where the pay is € 12.19 per hour seems a bit oversized. Is it difficult to get shore rescuers hired, Nurmijärvi municipality’s communications manager Teemu Siltanen?

“Yes, last summer we had challenges getting the seats filled and that’s why we wanted to market more prominently this year.”

Siltasen however, it is not just a single video, but is linked to a broader idea aimed at raising the profile of work in municipalities.

“The municipal sector has several professions with recruitment challenges. We have set out to solve the problem, among other things, by developing communication. ”

According to Siltanen, the video cost only a few thousand euros, as it was written and directed by the municipality’s own employee, a former magician, the current tourism coordinator, Janne Raudaskoski.

The video was released on Friday and has been viewed 50,000 times on all different release channels. A few people have already applied for a job.

“We believe that there will be more applications during the application period,” says Siltanen.
