The bug doesn’t affect all versions of Microsoft Word, but Microsoft still warned users to exercise caution when saving their work, in a note on the Microsoft Word page. official support. According to the note, users of one of the most widely used word processing software in the world may encounter an issue where files are deleted after saving, especially if the file title contains an uppercase extension (.DOCX, .RTF ) or the “#” symbol. The issue appears to have been identified in version 2409 of Word for Microsoft 365, build 18025.20104. The malfunction appears to be logged when the user closes Word after making changes to the file and accepts the save when prompted. Otherwise the file could simply disappear and end up in the trash, where it can still be restored.
Microsoft recommends that users be cautious and should manually save documents before exiting Word. “Our current tests show that the problem occurs after saving when you click X to close Word. Does not currently play when saving manually before closing”, we read on the support page.
Additionally, Microsoft suggests enabling the “Don’t show Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts”, can be activated via the path File > Options > Save > Don’t show Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts.
Another proposed solution is to go back to a previous version of Word until a fix update is available.
