Women’s football leagues at the level of Europe joined the European Football Association “UEFA” in criticizing the plan of the International Federation of the game “FIFA”, to hold the World Cup for men and women every two years instead of four.
Women’s leagues in Europe have warned that such a move threatens the development of women’s football.
Women’s league officials in England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden agreed that organizing the men’s World Cup every two years would “hamper the vision and growth” of women’s football.
Officials in the relevant leagues also agreed that holding the Women’s World Cup every two years, a goal that FIFA has long emphasized since the 2019 World Cup in France, may harm women’s football before it reaches the stage of maturity in less wealthy countries.
The statement warned that “only the leading countries with strong institutions have the capabilities and resources that enable them to compete on a regular basis.”
