The blue won the race easily 25-20, 25-8, 25-15
Italvolley flies to the semi-final of the 2021 European Women’s Championship. This is the verdict of the quarter-final played this afternoon at the Stark Arena in Belgrade which saw the Italians overtake Russia with a clear 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-15). The resistance of the opponents lasted a set, then the match was a blue monologue achieved thanks to an excellent choral performance. In the semifinals Italy will meet Holland, while the winner of the Serbia-France match, scheduled for tonight at 8pm at the Stark Arena in Belgrade, will challenge Turkey in the semifinals. Netherlands and Turkey, who arrived in Belgrade today, gained access to the semifinals on Tuesday 31 August in Plovdiv in Bulgaria. Yesterday, the oranges beat Sweden 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-19), the same result for the Turkish team that beat Poland 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25- 23). The semifinals will be played at the Stark Arena in Belgrade on Friday 3rd September.
Also for this quarter-final of the women’s European championship, coach Davide Mazzanti relies on the sextet composed of the diagonal Orro-Egonu, the spikers Pietrini and Sylla, the power plants Chirichella and Danesi and the free De Gennaro. The coach of Russia, Sergio Busato, chooses the sextet deployed in the last set of the eighth against Belarus and brings the diagonal Startseva-Kadochkina, the crushers Fedorovtseva and Kapustina, the central Brovkina and Enina and the free Pilipenko onto the field. At the start of the match the blue are struggling to find the right rhythm and Russia stretches to +3 (3-6). Egonu and Sylla shorten (5-6), but Italy is unable to catch up with their opponents (8-11). A wall by Orro, two opponents mistakes and Danesi to sign are worth 12-12. The blues find continuity: a hands out of the Italian captain is worth +2 (16-14). Italy continues to grind points (19-15) and does not allow the opponents to mend (20-18). It is the blue who close the first set without worries in their favor (25-20).
The start of the second fraction sees only Italy as protagonist: an attack by Egonu is worth the change-ball (4-3) and a long blue monologue begins. Orro’s turn at bat (in the long series for her also an ace) allows Sylla and her teammates to place a break worth +13 (16-3). A splendid choral performance that has no setbacks – Russia’s second time out arrives at +15 (22-7) – and which allows the Italians to close the set with a huge advantage (25-8). At the start of the third fraction the music does not change: for Italy it is immediately +4 (4-0). Russia tries to shorten (4-3), but a Russian error triggers the restart of the national team. Orro returns to serve (another ace for her), a wall by Egonu brings the girls of coach Mazzanti back to +4 (7-3). The Russian resistance is ineffective to contain the blue maneuver (7-5) a good turn at bat by Pietrini allows the blue to lengthen the pace and to go up to +6 (11-5). As happened in the previous set, then it is Italy that dictates the pace and the game. The blues continue to stretch (20-10), close the third fraction easily (25-15) and fly to the semifinals where, on Friday 3 September at the Stark Arena at 20, they will meet Holland.
