The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced that from next season women’s football will have a professional character in Serie A. Here we tell you how the process of this conquest was.
“We are the first federation in Italy to launch this important route”, said Gabriele Gravina, the president of the FIGC, when making the official presentation. In addition, he stressed that the body awarded 18 million euros to women’s soccer clubs in the last three years.
The debate on the situation of the soccer players was put on the table after the performance of the Italian team in the World Cup in France, in which the United States prevailed. That same year, the Italians managed to reach the Algarve Cup final and qualify for the Women’s European Championship.
In addition, the struggles of the organized players in the different parts of the world that have resulted in equal pay between the men’s and women’s teams in some selected teams, is part of the context in which this decision is made.
Italian women’s football will take the same steps as Spanish, in which its women’s league will also be professional next season after the approval by the Board of Directors of the statutes that will govern the competition. Just as they will do in Spain, the professionalization process in Italy will be gradual.
