In the Lebanese capital Beirut, a woman, along with a group of activists, raided a bank. The woman demanded $12,000 from her own savings to pay for her sister’s cancer treatment.
In her own words, the woman would have asked the bank several times for the money. Her account is said to be $20,000. Time and again her request was denied. Reason: since 2019 there are strict withdrawal limits in Lebanon. People can withdraw a maximum of 300 dollars per day.
“I begged the bank manager for my money and told my sister that my sister is dying and not long,” the robber said in an interview with a local broadcaster. “I have come to the point where I have nothing to lose.” She is said to have already sold many of her possessions for the treatment. She even considered donating her kidney for her 23-year-old sister.
According to her, a toy gun belonging to her nephew forced bank employees to pay out $12,000. She left the bank with the money in a plastic bag, eyewitnesses reported.
The woman is held in high esteem on social media in Lebanon. Since Lebanon has been in crisis, many residents have had to make ends meet. They also struggle, like the robber, with withdrawing their savings. The woman encourages other Lebanese to organize a similar action.
To set on fire
A month ago, a 42-year-old armed Lebanese in Beirut held bank employees and customers hostage for six hours. He threatened to set himself on fire if he was not allowed to withdraw his savings. The man would need that money to pay his father’s hospital bills.
Last January, a Lebanese coffee shop owner withdrew $50,000 after holed up in a bank and threatened to kill bank employees held hostage.
