For September 7 of this year, Laura Fernandes Costa, 31, and Matheus Turchete, 27, had scheduled their wedding in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The marriage can no longer take place because the woman underwent a surgery to look thinner at the nuptials and passed away a few days ago.
This device is inserted inside the stomach to take up space and make the patient eat less, which facilitates weight loss.
After the woman’s death on May 7, her family decided to report the clinic where she was operated on for “Medical negligence”.
‘There were failures in the postoperative period’
The engineer’s family asserts that she did not have good postoperative follow-up after the surgery, which was performed at the end of last April.
“The clinic could not only have provided her with better support, but also prevented it. The specialists said that she could not have undergone this procedure, due to her Body Mass Index (BMI), who did not support this surgery. “She weighed 70 kilos,” said the victim’s fiancé.
The woman’s relatives say that the day after surgery, she began vomiting blood.
But on May 6, the symptoms worsened and Laura had to be transferred by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) to the Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Hospital, in Nova Lima. Doctors discovered a perforation in her stomach.
Even though the engineer was prepared for surgery, He did not resist due to septicemia (a generalized infection). His body was full of feces. On May 7 he died.
