Deborah Hogde, a 49-year-old woman from England, has become a trend in recent days due to her bizarre decision to marry her cat, India, in order to avoid the pet restrictions of her future landlords.
The woman was interviewed by the news agency ‘South West News Service’ and indicated that, previouslyhad had to separate from her previous pets because the owners of the properties where she has lived under lease forced her to give up the animals.
The owner of the apartment where Hogde previously resided threatened to evict her if she continued to live there with her two huskies, Siri and Starshine, for which she had to give them up for adoption.
“It absolutely broke my heart (…) Your pets become part of your family and it was absolutely devastating to have to say goodbye to them,” said the British referring to her previous animals.
Later, she also had to part with her cat Jamal due to her landlord’s rules. The woman begged the owner to allow her to adopt another pet and that was when, in 2017, the feline India came into her life.

Unfortunately in 2020, the cat lost one of her hind legs after being hit by a car, so Hodge argues that India is now more dependent on her and requires her special care.
Why did you marry your pet?
Last March 17the British lost her job, so she will soon have to find another place to live. For this reason, he feared that the owners of his future home would not allow him to have pets and he would have to say goodbye to India.
“I am down to my last cents… I am terrified of losing India. I can barely leave my house with anxiety about what the future holds and I am desperate not to lose my cat,” Hodge said.
Although it seems like a drastic decision, the woman stated that it would be the only way to be taken seriously when she says that she is not willing to part with her feline.

“She is fundamentally the most important thing in my life after my children. By marrying India, I need the future owners to know that we come as a package and that we cannot part under any circumstances as she is as important to me as she is.” the children,” he said.
Thus, Hodge intends to get rid of the conditions of the lease contracts, so he can rent any property without having to abandon his cat.
“I don’t want to lose another beloved pet. I swore in sickness and in health, in death do us part, and I meant it, “said the British.
Wedding
The ceremony took place on April 19 in a park in south-east London. Close friends of the bride attended and brought a person authorized to establish the civil union before the law.
In England, the law does not specifically mention whether or not marriage between animals and humans is prohibited, so other cases have already been seen before.

However, in the UK animals are legally recognized as sentient beings, so sexual abuse of any species is prohibited.
Hodge wore a tuxedo-type dress, while India wore a fine gold mantle.
“I had nothing to lose and everything to gain, so I married my cat! (…) I recited vows under the universe that no man will ever separate me and India”.
The woman assures that her relatives treated her “crazy”, including her two children, but that this did not matter to her, since she was fully determined to bond for eternity with her pet.
