FP1 debut for the Italian driver
Andrea Kimi Antonellithe new hope of Italian speed motor racing, has just turned 18 and on Friday he will have a very special birthday present. The driver from Bologna will make his F1 debut at the wheel of the Mercedes in the first free practice session of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The driver who will take over the wheel will be George Russell, who will then regularly drive the W15 starting from FP2 also because Antonelli will be busy in F2.
Toto Wolff did not hide his excitement for another stage of an important journey that began with Antonelli six years ago: “Kimi has been part of our junior program since he was 12 years old.so this is an exciting moment for him and the team. I’m sure he will enjoy the experience of driving in front of his home crowd, who will also be excited to see a new Italian talent on track. We look forward to seeing Kimi in the W15 on Friday morning.”
Mercedes will have to redeem itself in Monza after a disappointing weekend in Zandvoort: “In Holland we did not live up to expectations. The team is analyzing the data to understand what went wrong and we have the opportunity to redeem ourselves immediately in Monza. It is a very different circuit to Zandvoort, and probably this year it will be even faster thanks to the changes that have been made. We will have to understand the impact that the new asphalt will have in terms of performance and evolution of the track”.
