The Red Bull domain
The start of this season has exalted the evident technical superiority of the team Red Bull compared to other single-seaters, starting with those of top teams such as Ferrari and Mercedes, without excluding the ‘surprising’ Aston Martin. In the first two GPs of the world championship, the Anglo-Austrian team dominated the scene with two braces and with two different winners, leaving no way out for the competition. Detachments and races conducted solo that recalled the recent golden age of Mercedesnow in a crisis of results but capable of conquering eight constructors’ world titles from 2014 to 2021.
Deserved successes
A superiority that risks decreasing the level of entertainment on the track as regards the fight for victory, even if the Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, wanted to underline another aspect. While acknowledging the overwhelming dominance of Red Bull, the Austrian manager preferred to dwell on the concept of meritocracy: “We’ve had years where we’ve been just as strong, but it’s one question of meritocracy – has explained – we don’t have to put it down, because I remember hearing rumors like that between 2014 and 2020. What makes this sport so special is that you have to work hard to win, and you deserve it, and that’s a fact. While it’s not great for the show that the same ones always win, it’s because they they did a good job, and we didn’t. We all hope for the show, ed it is our duty to catch up and fight against these guys. We will do everything in our power to react and try to identify their areas of weakness. Entertainment follows sport, and Red Bull’s dominance may not be good commercially, but that’s what makes Formula 1 so special.”
Don’t give up until the end
The first signs of recovery of Mercedes were already seen in the last test in Jeddah: the W14, daughter of a “project to be trashed”as Wolff himself had stated, managed to demonstrate a step superior to that of the Ferrarias demonstrated by George Russell’s 4th place and 5th by Lewis Hamilton. The latter, at the end of the Saudi race, also admitted that in his life he had never seen a car as fast as the RB19, but Wolff sent out a clear message: “If the fight is on, we stay to fight and don’t throw in the towel“.
