The excited finale of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, decisive for Max Verstappen’s world title victory, had sent Mercedes and his team principal into a rage Toto Wolff, with related protests and appeals presented by the German team for the outcome of the race. The consequent absences of the drivers and team leaders at the FIA award ceremony had underlined the climate of strong disputes by the Star against the Race Direction, so much so as to generate further tensions also between Mercedes and Red Bull. However, several days after Yas Marina’s last lap, the Austrian manager himself seems to have appeased his disappointment at what happened.
A sensation that emerged during an interview reported by Quick Formula, in which the 49-year-old Viennese has denied any form of adversity towards his direct rivals, praising them for the success obtained in the drivers’ championship: “The statements against me after the protest in Abu Dhabi – commented – they were certainly dictated by emotion. I can understand that when you have won the race, and therefore the title, a dispute can be frustrating. I have nothing to say against Horner, Marko, Verstappen or Red Bull, rather. They have been worthy contestants this year. We fought like never before, on and off the track, but in the end they won the championship, and this must be acknowledged ”.
“I think all of this binds us even more for the future: we may have lost the championship with the Abu Dhabi decision, but Helmut, Christian and Max are pilots, and we have all seen what happened. – added Wolff – Similar things also happened to them during the World Cup. Maybe this balances things out, or maybe it doesn’t. Limiting ourselves to the Abu Dhabi decision alone, it was so brutal that the driver in them will recognize it, and I am sure of it. Together I think we can change the rules to make decision making more aware in the interest of us, Red Bull and all the other teams ”.
