The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be the final act of the 2021 World Championship, still waiting to decree the winner both in terms of the drivers ‘and constructors’ championships. A season, the one destined to end in the archive on December 12, characterized by the challenge and the heated one rivalry not only between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, but also by the respective teams represented by the two drivers: Mercedes and Red Bull. Specifically, again with regard to the two teams, during the year there was no lack of tensions between the team principals, Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, protagonists of verbal clashes that have ignited an unprecedented rivalry in the turbo-hybrid era of the Circus.
In this regard, the number one of Mercedes intervened, who thus described the ‘face to face’ with the manager of the Austrian house: “It is an absolutely genuine rivalry – Wolff explained to the podcast F1 Nation – precisely because there is a lot at stake. We are ambitious teams and people who are fighting tooth and nail for the victory of this championship. Once you are involved in this challenge, there is no way, in your mind, to create a space for the other person. At least, this applies to me. This does not necessarily mean having negative or positive emotions. Sometimes I got carried away when I heard some comments that annoyed me, but it happened a couple of times β.
More specifically about the personal relationship between him and Horner, Wolff finally described the character differences between him and the Red Bull team principal: βIt is impossible to establish a relationship – He admitted – also because the stakes are very high. Everyone tries to defend the interests of their team, and I believe that we are different people also in the way of interpreting the world. I just try to stay authentic and do what I think is right and appropriate – he concluded – and he does the same in his own way. Maybe, one day, we might even have a laugh, but not today β. A few days before the grand final in Abu Dhabi, Mercedes leads the constructors’ standings with a 29-point lead over Red Bull, with a good chance of getting their hands on the eighth world title in its history, as well as in a row. On the contrary, Hamilton and Verstappen will be on the Yas Marina track exactly on equal points: in the event of both of them finishing outside the top ten, it will be the Dutchman who will win the first world championship of his career. If, on the other hand, the British were to prevail, this would also be the eighth statement for the latter, which would constitute an absolute record for an F1 driver.
