This Sunday marks 19 days since the flood that devastated the Huerta Sur of Valencia and in Paiportaone of the most affected towns, the situation remains critical for different reasons.

There are no shops open, and no matter where you look, mud and debris flood every corner. The mayor of this municipality describes the situation as “critical” and “desperate” for its inhabitants since many more means are missing to recover a situation close to normality.

Maribel Albalat also denounces the risk to public health posed by the collapse of the sewers, which “is causing sewage to homeswith the health risk that this entails”.

Almost three weeks later, only a couple of pharmacies serve as best they can to the more than 26,000 local residents. Small heroic gestures in streets that are still clogged and in which free services such as hairdressing are offered, given the impossibility, still, of being able to open any establishment.

Closed schools

Regarding schools, the City Council and the educational community of Paiporta have agreed not to resume classes until all Public Health requirements are met and have asked the Department of Education to make the start date more flexible and extend provisional shelter to students in educational centers that cannot reopen.

As reported by the City Council in a statement, the Department of Education has announced that classes will begin on November 25, but the Department of Education of the Consistory has taken up the request of the municipality’s educational centers to wait until the conditions are certified and the families have complete assurance that the students return with all the guarantees.

The Councilor for Education of Paiporta, Susana Morenohas reassured the directors of the centers and the Ampas and has stated: “No student will under any circumstances lose their place in their center of origin and classes will not be resumed until it is completely safe and the sanitary conditions are perfectly certified both inside the center and on the access roads”.

For her part, the Education Inspector, Ana Ramirez, He explained that the Conselleria is studying the possibility of extending the return period for students displaced to other locations.

While the situation of the students is regulated, The start of classes and telematic attention is being studied for students who have not been able to travel and, over the next few days, the telematic connection by each center will progressively begin.

The educational community and the Paiporta City Council agree that classes will not be resumed in the centers of origin until the access roads and all educational centers comply with all necessary health and safety conditions.
