The figures in Bogota
A study by the Observatory of Women and Gender Equity in Bogotá (OMEG) of the Secretariat for Women revealed that as of 2017 there is a record of 3,511 alleged sexual crimes against women in the city, of which 682 were on the street or public highway.
As for public transport, a survey carried out by the Violet System Team of the Secretariat for Women on sexual harassment in 2017 revealed that “more than 80% of women users of transport perceive it as unsafe or very unsafe and more than 70% have been victims or have witnessed sexual harassment in the surroundings of TransMilenio”.
So, according to the figures, it can be concluded that women do face situations that cause them insecurity or fear on public transport and that support like the one Pilar received does make a difference.
