This past September 21, we lived in the Senate of the Republic a dramatic scene at the opening of the debate on extend the military accompaniment of the National Guard until 2029. This initiative reached the Senate through a consultation between the parliamentary groups of Morena and the PRI on the Chamber of Deputies, which created a deep schism between the opposition parties.
During the days prior to the discussion in the Senate, organizations such as Civil Society Mexico tried to communicate with senators and opposition senators through social networks, asking them to confirm their attendance at the Chamber and their vote against, their main target being the members of the PRI parliamentary group – since it was unknown if they would follow their coordinator, or if they would emulate the footsteps of their colleagues in the Chamber of Deputies. Accompanied by rumors of negotiations, pressure and threats, which even led to the defection of PAN member Raúl Paz, many of us followed the events in the Senate with concern and uncertainty.
Little by little, the PRI senators began to express their positions, mainly the coordinator, Osorio Chong, and Senators Ruiz Massieu and Paredes Rangel, who spoke out against the initiative. After the declarations that the PRI would not vote together, the eyes focused on Senator Mario Zamora, who had not yet spoken, and who was also being publicly pressured by Governor Rocha Moya and Ambassador Quirino Ordaz. In a short time, the senator shared a video in which he declared that “a popular representative owes himself to the people” and that, therefore, he would vote against it.

From messages like this, and seeing that it had not been possible to turn over enough members of the opposition, it was promoted to postpone the discussion. As a result, the opposition in the Senate remains firm despite the breakdown of the alliance, it was clear that there are still PRI members willing to fight against Morena’s authoritarianism, and Zamora emerged as the undisputed opposition leader in Sinaloa.
Despite this victory, the initiative can be presented again, and the regime has time and resources to look for other “Raules Paz”, so the opposition must remain united, strong and consistent.
