Kherson adopts a number of successive and accelerated decisions, from adopting the Russian language in it, to the naturalization of its newly born children with Russian citizenship, as revealed by Kirill Strimosov, deputy head of the pro-Russian civil-military administration of Kherson Province.
“Children born after February 24 in the Kherson region will automatically receive citizenship of the Russian Federation, in addition to this, orphans will also be registered as Russian citizens,” the deputy head of the Kherson region’s civil-military administration said in an interview with the Russian “Novosti” agency.
Observers believe that the momentum that characterizes the series of de-facto measures and the link between Kherson Province and Russia, shows that this region is on its way to being the first regions to join Russian territory, making it an example for the rest of the regions controlled by Russian and allied forces, as is the case in The eastern Donbass region, for example.
They pointed out that the focus on making administrative and legal decisions and procedures that affect people’s daily lives and their minutes, and are related to their details and their future, is with the aim of creating a reality that is difficult to budge, which, according to them, will lead to the preponderance of the scenario of the partition of Ukraine in the future between a pro-Russian part that may officially join it, and another pro-Western.
Kherson, the center of the strategic region in the south of the country, was the first major city to fall into the hands of the Russian army after Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24.
On March 16, the Russian Defense Ministry announced full control of all the territories located in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine.
Strimosov had stated that there was a “great demand” for the issuance of Russian passports in the region, and according to him, more than 10,000 applications for Russian citizenship had been submitted.
The deputy head of the civil-military administration of Kherson Province stressed, a few days ago, that a clear process of joining Russia is taking place in the region, adding that Kherson will never return to Ukraine.
Kherson is located in southern Ukraine, and is considered an important and major port on the Black Sea and on the Dnipro River, with a population of about 300,000 people. It overlooks the Sea of Azov from the southeast and the Black Sea from the southwest, in addition to that it forms a link between the Crimea and the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.
Kherson has Ukraine’s largest shipbuilding port in the Black Sea, and is a major center for shipping. The city grew steadily during the nineteenth century, due to shipping and shipbuilding, and remained a major center for shipbuilding throughout the past century.
Ukrainian officials had expected that Russia would plan to hold a referendum in the Kherson region to declare its independence, as it did in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in 2014.
Moscow recognized the unilaterally declared republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, just two days before the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24.
