The food basket It is an instrument of Public politicswhich represents the pattern of consumption that meets the energy and nutrient needs of mexicans.
It's integrated by 40 productssuch as, for example, tortillas, wheat derivatives, rice, cereals, beef, pork, chicken and fish, milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables, sugar and beverages, among others.
In Mexico from 42 years ago is used the concept of food basketHowever, it was not until 2004 with the promulgation of the General Law of Social Development that the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL) emerged and since that date, it has been the only body responsible for measuring the poverty.
In this sense, CONEVAL defined 2 poverty lines:
The extreme poverty line by income, which is equivalent to the cost of the food basket.
The poverty line by income, which is equivalent to the cost of the food basket plus the non-food basket, that is, expenses on services are added to food, such as transportation, cleaning, education, housing, clothing, health and recreation.
In the first step, the extreme poverty line by income or food basket, is equivalent to $1,751 per month per person in rural areas, so, considering a family of 4 members, the cost amounts to $7,002 per month, which is the necessary income. so that a family can cover their basic food needs.
In the city, life is more expensive and that is why the food basket rises to $2,288 per month per person and therefore, for a family of 4 the cost is $9,151 per month.
So all people who have a family income of less than $9,151 per month are in extreme income poverty, since they cannot even cover food for their families.
If we analyze it by six-year term, with López Obrador, Mexicans have had the greatest increase in the prices of the Food Basket. In these 5 years and 4 months, the food basket has increased 48% in rural areas and 46% in the city, this is well above inflation, which during the same period was 31%, which means that prices of food are growing at a faster rate than the rest of merchandise.
While with Enrique Peña Nieto, the food basket increased only 28% in the countryside and 29% in the city; with Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, the increase was 36% in rural areas and 34% in the city; and, with Vicente Fox Quesada, the food basket increased 29% in the countryside and the city.
Now let's analyze the second step, the income poverty line, which includes the food basket plus the non-food basket and which in this case is $3,252 per month per person in rural areas, so for a family of 4 members the cost It is $13,009 per month.
And in the city, the income poverty line is $4,515 per month per person and for a family of 4 it rises to $18,060 per month.
This means that all people whose family income is less than $18,060 per month are in income poverty.
And if not, if you earn more, then congratulations, you have surpassed the poverty line.
Therefore, I ask you, dear reader: considering that the extreme income poverty line is $9,151 for a family and the income poverty line is $18,060, are you in extreme income poverty, in income poverty or have you already overcome poverty?
