ABU DHABI (Reuters) – A first-half goal from Romelu Lukaku secured Chelsea a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal on Wednesday to seal a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup final. .
The European champions will face Libertadores champions Palmeiras on Saturday at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, after the Belgian striker Lukaku scored from close range in the 32nd minute.
Without manager Thomas Tuchel, who did not lead the team on the field after testing positive for Covid-19, the Blues appeared to be in control in the first half, fully deserving the advantage gained before the break.
However, Asian champions Al Hilal improved greatly in the second half, with Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga making several key saves to keep his team in the lead.
Chelsea threatened to make a second late in the match, but Lukaku’s charge proved insufficient. Still, the London club secured its place in the final of a competition whose trophy it never won.
