The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukelereaches 1,662,313 votes with 70.25% of the minutes processed in the preliminary scrutiny of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), which recognized difficulties in the transmission of results from the boards of voting at polling stations.
With these results, which must be ratified in a final scrutiny with the physical records, a process that takes several days, Bukele would obtain an overwhelming advantage over his opponents.
Behind Bukele, from the ruling New Ideas (NI) party, is the Farabundo Martí Front for National Liberation (FMLN, left) with 139,025 votes and the National Republican Alliance (Arena, right), with 122,926 votes.
With these results, Bukele has 12 times more votes than the candidate in second place.
The parties Nuestro Tiempo (NT), Fuerza Solidaria, Fuerza Patriótica Salvadoreña are located below NI, the FMLN and Arena.
Nuevas Ideas also leads the votes in the remote mode abroad via the internet and in-person voting abroad.
The electoral body has not yet provided preliminary statistics on the total number of voters and abstentionism.
The collegiate entity recognized early this Monday multiple actions that have hindered the development of the activities of transmitting the preliminary results from the voting centers, which is why it agreed to manually issue the preliminary minutes.
Users on social networks have reported irregularities in the transmission of voting ballots during the count, which in many polling stations has extended until the early hours of this Monday.
Celia Medrano, candidate for vice president of El Salvador for the Nuestro Tiempo party, told reporters this Monday that the Electoral Court “is not capable” of “being able to verify any data that has been publicly announced on the basis of corroboration of ballots versus the electronic system that has failed everywhere.
On Sunday night, Bukele proclaimed himself the winner of the Presidency with more than 85% of the votes and announced, Even without official data, Nuevas Ideas would continue to dominate the Legislative Assembly with 58 deputies out of a total of 60.
Nevertheless, The Electoral Tribunal has processed only 5% of the minutes of the legislative votes.
Having a majority in Congress will allow Bukele, who if the data is confirmed would become the first president of El Salvador to be re-elected, to continue his war against gangs through an emergency regime, implemented since March 2022.
The popularity achieved by this measure, which reduced the number of homicides in the country considered for many years to be one of the most violent in the world, helped Bukele sweep the presidential and legislative elections held on Sunday.
