Winter | A wind blows from the Atlantic, which brings a drastic change to Helsinki's weather

The Föhn wind will bring warmth and sleet to Helsinki on Tuesday. The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns motorists and pedestrians about bad weather.

Helsinki the region will experience a sharp change in the weather on Monday and Tuesday. Even on Monday, early in the morning, it was about ten degrees below zero, of course also milder than during the day.

The temperature already rose during the morning and settled down to five degrees below zero.

From here the weather will continue to warm up when a warm breath of föhn wind arrives from the west and northwest on Tuesday and the temperature near the south coast will settle on the sheltered side for a couple of days, says the meteorologist on duty Sara Salonen Forecasta.

On Tuesday, it will be two degrees warmer, i.e. a transition of more than 20 degrees from freezing to plus.

In Uusimaa, the Finnish Meteorological Institute's warning about potentially dangerous traffic weather is in effect. The warning in question has been given to Uusimaa for Monday and Tuesday.

In addition, Uusimaa has been given a warning for potentially dangerous pedestrian weather for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Helsinki it will still be a little frosty in the region on Tuesday morning, but by noon it will be on the positive side, says Salonen.

“Near the coast, it's on the plus side even at night, but on the inland side the temperature can be between zero and one degree below zero,” explains Forecan Salonen.

Inland here already means Vantaa. During the day, Vantaa is also on the plus side, according to the forecast.

“It is very possible that on Wednesday it will still be 1-2 degrees Celsius on the south coast, but on Thursday it will clearly freeze when the wind turns to the north.

Salonen says that when the föhn wind blows, the Helsinki region typically has temperatures even in winter. The Föhn wind easily reaches Finland when low pressure forms in the northeastern part of Finland.

Föhn wind runs from the Atlantic over the mountains between Sweden and Norway to Finland. The moisture in the air rising up the mountain slopes condenses and rains on the ground. When descending the eastern slopes of the mountain, the air is therefore drier and as it descends, it warms up. Thus, warmed and dried air flows into Finland.

No major rains are expected in the capital region in the coming days. According to the forecast, it may snow or sleet in Eastern Uusimaa on Wednesday evening. With these prospects, the rain will stay on the eastern side of Helsinki, but only time will tell how exactly it will be.

From Thursday, the weather will turn slightly colder again in the capital region, but there is again a small chance of a föhn wind over the weekend.

“The general picture is that the worst frosts are behind us for the time being,” says Salonen.
