Images of “waves” in a swimming pool on the balcony of a millionaire apartment in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, gained social media for a curious reason: the scenes, recorded last Thursday (19), prove in practice the oscillation of the building, caused by the wind.
The recording was made in an apartment for sale on the 30th floor of a building facing the sea, on Avenida Atlântica. The author of the video is businessman Patrick Biazotto, who negotiates the apartment. He posted the images on social media while visiting the property, and the video quickly gained repercussions.

– It was windy and the water swayed a lot, but I didn’t feel anything (oscillating). So much so, that I only really noticed the wind when I opened the glass door and saw the pool – commented the businessman.
According to the wave propagation inside the pool, experts say that the movement was not the result of direct action of the wind on the water surface, but of a phenomenon called “sloshing”: the oscillation of liquid inside a moving container. In other words, what causes the waves is the movement of the pool itself.
This oscillation, which is natural in tall buildings and a safety mechanism, is imperceptible. But it can be verified in some situations – as occurred in Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina.
In buildings, the oscillation is necessary so that the structure gives way slightly to the wind, without being damaged. The challenge, for engineers, is precisely to make this coming and going imperceptible to residents.
– It is a fact that all buildings move, within the limits established by the norms, so as not to cause pathologies in the constructions, such as cracks. And there are limits so that users don’t feel uncomfortable – says engineer Bruno Ricardo Franzmann, who worked on projects for some of the biggest skyscrapers in Balneário Camboriú.
Sérgio Stolovas says that if the construction is in accordance with the standards and good engineering practices, there is no danger for users.
– It’s not a risk, but it can be a functional problem – says the expert, referring to specific cases in which the coming and going causes some discomfort.
