Sainz and the Williams gamble
Carlos Sainz has finally found a new home. The Spaniard made official last Monday an agreement with Williams that will see him drive for the Grove team in 2025 and at the beginning of the new era of cars. With all due respect to such a historic team, for Smooth Operator it’s a stopgap measure: he couldn’t admit it, but he made it clear between the lines when before Spa he stated that his priority would be a title-winning car.
Evidently, right in Belgium the doors to Sainz were definitively closed by Red Bull and Mercedes, and a difficult 2025 is in sight for the Spaniard. But Williams assured the #55 – as they did with Alex Albon – that the future is bright.
Vowles’ words
In the words of team principal James Vows it highlights not only the pride of having brought home a driver from Ferrari, but also the ambition of the Grove team. An ambition that led the British driver to contact Sainz for the first time as far back as 2023: “It all started in Abu Dhabi last year. The message I gave him and his family at the time is no different to the one I gave him last weekend in Spa, and I think that explains the success of the operation. From the beginning I told him what was going to happen, why I was excited about this project: I know we will be successful in the future, and I know it will cost us in the short term, but I am confident that honesty and transparency have paid off.“.
“I think Carlos sees that in the circumstances he is in, strong leadership is needed. There are not individuals, but a team: he sees us as the right investment to move forward. I think it is a huge event for Williams to have two of the best drivers in the world. I think it is a sign of things to come.“.
