A video of the protest shows people angrily waving signs with texts such as ‘Prince William, leave our country’. The visit is seen by residents as ‘colonialism’, as can be read on the signs. In addition, the villagers would be outraged that William and Catherine’s helicopter would land on the local football field without permission, British media report.
The protest stems from a conflict over tracts of land lost in the colonial era. The village is in conflict with, among others, Flora & Fauna International, a charity that protects ecosystems and which Prince William is a patron of. Residents are not allowed to use a large tract of land owned by the charity as it would be ‘private land’.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit several Caribbean countries in about a week to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee. After Belize they visit Jamaica and the Bahamas.
