There NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics card it will have a more compact heatsink than the RTX 4090 Founders Edition. This is what emerges from a new indiscretion, provided by the usual Kopite7kimi on a completely new PCB layout.
While the current NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 Founders Edition GPUs adopt a three-slot design, with dual axial technology fans, the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition should be slimmer and adopt a cooling solution dual-slot with a dual-fan heatsink. However, we do not have any information on the design, that is, we do not know whether the card will use the same double axial flow-through design as the RTX 4090 Founders Edition or whether it will opt for a front-facing design.
If confirmed, the move to a dual-slot design would have major implications, not just on size. It would indeed mean that NVIDIA has made radical changes to the cooling solution that will allow it to dissipate over 400W of heat in a smaller package. Or that Blackwell chips are capable of producing very high performance without generating much heat. We currently know that NVIDIA is testing several coolers for its next-generation lineup, so it will be interesting to see the final designs of the Founders Edition.
NVIDIA is expected to unveil its first Blackwell “RTX 50” gaming graphics cards in Q4 2024, which should see the launch first of the RTX 5080 followed by the RTX 5090 a few weeks later.
Based on these details, we can expect some major upgrades and a 2-slot design to make the flagship much more affordable than previous 3-4 slot designs. Currently, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 can go up to 4.5 slots in custom hybrid-cooled models like the massive MSI SUPRIM FUZION recently announced.
