A return to everyday life, as it was before the corona pandemic, believes world doctors boss Montgomery is not very likely. He paints a different vision of the future.
Berlin – The vaccination campaign against the coronavirus is continuing, but the numbers are currently also increasing in Europe. But how likely is it that the virus will completely disappear in the future – and with it the corona measures?
“Will never get rid of Corona”: the head of world doctors gives a bitter prognosis
The chairman of the World Medical Association has now made a less than edifying prognosis. Frank Ulrich Montgomery expects, for example, that masks will no longer disappear from everyday life.
When asked whether he saw a point in time when Corona could be viewed as a completely normal disease, Montgomery said on Sunday in the ARD “Europamagazin” that the point had been reached when 85 percent of the population had been immunized through vaccination and going through the disease .
“But we will never get rid of Corona again. In certain situations we will always have to wear masks, wash hands, keep our distance and we will have to have regular vaccinations, as we know that from the flu, ”he added.
With a view to the significant increase in the number of infections in Great Britain and the planned lifting of the corona restrictions there, Montgomery said that he considered it “completely irresponsible to do such relaxation exercises with these incidence values and a halting vaccination campaign (…).” He wonder how many people would be infected in the evening at the European Championship finals at Wembley Stadium. “And I dread it a little.” (dpa / rjs)
