While the figures of birth rate suffer this year the lowest drop in the last 80 years, the presence of pets in homes does not stop growing. Today there are 13 million pets registered, making Spain an aging country, where there are also more and more fewer children and more dogs in homes.
Figures caused mainly by the pandemic and the economic crisis caused by the virus, and which has made it impossible for many families to have sufficient economic independence to be able to support a child.
Keeping a dog, on the other hand, is much easier and cheaper, while the basic bills for dogs amount to an average of just over 37 euros, those for a child are between 350 and 420 euros on average per month, during the first year of life, an amount that grows over time.

More than twice as many pets
Some figures that provoke the current scenario in Spain. According to the National Institute of Statistics, as of today there are 6,265,153 children under the age of 14 in the country, while according to the Spanish Companion Animal Identification Network (REIAC) the number of registered pets rises to 13 million, some figures that are not entirely exact since despite being mandatory, there are still owners who still do not register their animals.
However, the figures and the difference between the total number of pets and children is different according to the autonomous communities. According to data from the Consistory in Madrid, there are 282,375 dogs registered, compared to 152,009 children between 0 and 4 years old, and in the Valencian Community there are about a million pets and those under 14 years old are 734,529.
According to the National Association of Pet Food Manufacturers (ANFAAC) as a result of forced confinement and sanitary restrictions, the number of animals in homes shot among citizens to combat loneliness.
While dogs have an average monthly cost of 37 euros, those of a child are between 350 and 420 euros.
Despite the fact that many pets continue to be abandoned, the increase in transport, establishments and vacation spots that allow the entry of pets, makes it easier for more and more people to take the pet everywhere, making it one of the family .
