An article on LifeScience tried to explain why males struggle to keep their eyes open after sexual intercourse and although there is no exact cause to justify the phenomenon, there are nonetheless direct and indirect reasons.
As overwhelming and passionate as the sexual encounter may have been, once concluded, many men struggle to keep their eyes open and they fall asleep instantly or almost. True, even some women happen to fall into Morpheus’ arms at the end of the relationship, but the phenomenon seems to affect mainly the other sex. And how it explains Melinda Wenner Moyerscience journalist with a degree in molecular biology from the University of Michigan, in an article on LifeScienceWhile we cannot pinpoint the exact cause of post-sex male sleepiness, there are nonetheless biochemical and evolutionary reasons, some direct and some indirect, to try to explain it.
Orgasm leads to relaxation
Without prejudice to the obvious physical fatigue that occurs after sex, an act that generally takes place at night and in a bed, thus promoting rest, research has shown that a primary requirement for orgasm be that to be able to let go. That is, to get rid of fears and anxiety, so as to relax, which would explain the tendency to fall asleep after reaching it. If that wasn’t enough, men release a during ejaculation brain chemicals cocktailincluding norepinephrine, serotonin and, most importantly, oxytocin, vasopressin, and prolactin, the latter three hormones that are associated with sleep and the reduction of stress levelswhich can thus promote relaxation.
The evolutionary explanation: sleep to regenerate
According to the scientistthe evolutionary reasons are more difficult to explain post-sex sleepiness. Given that, from the evolutionary point of view, the main objective of man is to reproduce, sleeping does not therefore seem to be the most appropriate move to achieve the goal. In reality – suggests Wenner Moyer – sleep could serve as means to regenerate and regain strength, so as to be ready for a new relationship. It is also possible that sleepiness is just a side effect combined with the release of oxytocin and vasopressin. In addition to being associated with sleep, these two brain chemicals are involved in what is called couple bonding and, consequently, their production during orgasm. it can increase trust between sexual partners, thus partly explaining the link between sex and emotional attachment.
In short, as we have seen, the possible explanations for post-sex sleepiness can be many, even if none are decisive, and women can only get used to this almost exclusively male condition, because it does not seem destined to change soon. The consolation? A recent survey of 10,000 British men revealed that 48% of them fall asleep during sex, which is far worse.
