The sinusitis originates due to inflammation of the tissue lining the paranasal sinuses as a result of a reaction caused by a virus, fungus or bacteria.
The sinuses are air-filled spaces between the skull, forehead, nose, cheeks, and eyes. The inflammation can cause the sinus blockage and this causes the mucus to get trapped and with this bacteria and other microorganisms proliferate.
Sinusitis interferes with the way you breathe, which becomes difficult, as well as making the eye area feel swollen and very sensitive.
Among the causes of chronic sinusitis These may include infections, sinus growths (nasal polyps), or swelling of the sinus lining. Also called chronic rhinosinusitis, the condition can affect both adults and children, the Mayo Clinic notes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that symptoms of sinusitis are the following:
- runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Pain or pressure in the face
- Headache
- Mucus dripping from the throat (postnasal drip)
- Throat pain
- Cough
- Bad breath
ANDtreatment for sinusitis It will depend on the evaluations that a doctor performs, since each case is different. Among the most common treatments are:
nasal corticosteroids. These nasal sprays help prevent and treat inflammation. Some examples are fluticasone, triamcinolone, budesonide, mometasone, and beclomethasone.
saline nasal irrigation with nasal sprays or solutions, it reduces drainage and eliminates irritants and allergies.
Oral or injectable corticosteroids. These medications are used to relieve inflammation from severe sinusitis, especially if you also have nasal polyps.
Antiallergic. If allergies are causing sinusitis, your doctor may recommend allergy medications.
Aspirin desensitization treatment, if you have reactions to aspirin that cause sinusitis and nasal polyps. Under medical supervision, you receive progressively higher doses of aspirin to increase tolerance.

Antifungal treatment. If your infection is due to fungus, you may receive antifungal treatment.
Medicines to treat nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis. If you have nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis, your doctor may give you an injection of a medication called dupilumab or omalizumab to treat the condition.
