Over the past week the Ferrari test scheduled at Fiorano was a real diplomatic case that demonstrates how the ‘thermometer’ of the competition is quite high in view of 2022. The Scuderia di Maranello had planned a four-day test with the SF21 of 2021 on the track, a possibility which seemed made possible following the update of article 8.2 of the F1 sporting regulations according to which the tests must be carried out “With cars that comply with the technical regulations of any of the three calendar years preceding the last championship”. This agreement reached by the teams still had to be ratified by the FIA and for this reason some rival teams of Ferrari were able to stop the entry on the track of the 2021 SF21.
According to what is reported by today’s edition of The Gazzetta dello Sport in an analysis by Paolo Filisetti, among the suspects behind this tripping at Ferrari there are Aston Martin And Red Bull. The fear of the competitors was that the use of an SF21 could allow collect data for the benefit of the 2022 power unit. An example is the verification of the correctness of the location of the accessories and the operating parameters, for example, at the level of air pressure in the supply plenum. After the more than satisfactory debut of the updated hybrid system starting from the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, the Maranello engine department is working on the new endothermic engine to complete a power unit that will have nothing to envy to the competitors in the key season during which the development of the power units will be frozen until 2025 (inclusive). Collecting extremely valuable data would have been crucial for verifying the work carried out at the dynamic bench, a possibility that the competition wanted to deny the Scuderia di Maranello. Ferrari, obviously, is a real bogeyman in view of the upcoming championship and they did not want to give any ‘advantage’ to the men in red.
