Incident details
- Wissam Mohamed plugged his mobile phone into the charger and placed it under his pillow, before going to sleep.
- The phone exploded late Saturday night, leaving the boy with severe burns to 80 percent of his body.
- He was first aided and taken to a hospital in Sulaymaniyah to receive treatment, but he died on Sunday afternoon due to the severity of his burns.
the reasons
In order to find out the reasons for what happened, the Iraqi technology expert Moa’mal Ahmed said, in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”:
- “Unfortunately, such incidents usually result from people’s lack of awareness, especially young people, of the danger of connecting mobile devices to the charger for long hours, while they are in their hands or close to them.”
- “As a result of leaving it in this way, it may explode and burn, which sometimes causes large fires, injuries and deaths, as happened with this boy.”
increased risk
The technology expert also explains that there are factors that may increase the “risk of charging the phone”, including:
- The mobile phone should be placed on a flammable surface while charging, and this contributes to raising the phone’s temperature even more.
- The sofa or bed is one of the places that increase the risk of ignition, so you should avoid placing the phone on it while it is charging.
- Placing the mobile phone under the pillow, as happened with the Iraqi boy, increased the pressure on the phone and prevented it from being ventilated, and thus raised its temperature, which led to its explosion..
Ahmed concludes by emphasizing that “the incidence of such explosions increases with relatively old and used mobile phones, or with poor and non-original chargers, which usually cause damage to phone batteries and overheating, which is harmful to disasters such as this situation.”
