This Thursday, March 24, the deleted scene of “TheBatman”which includes images that were only recently known to exist, when asked Matt Reeves about who truly is the invisible prisoner of Arkham. The director replied that this is a proto-Joker and that if we hadn’t cut a scene, we would know more about the character.

Now, with the premiere of this scene on the official Warner Bros. Pictures channel, many fans wonder why this Joker has so many scars and looks so deformed. What happened?

In an interview with IGN, Matt Reeves said that the “Joker is not the Joker yet” and that it is inspired by Conrad Veidt’s Gwynplaine in “The man who laughs,” the 1928 silent film.

“It stays in this suspenseful way, away from you visually. But I wanted to create an iteration of it that felt distinctive and new, but went back to the roots, so it’s very much out of the mold of Conrad Veidt and that silent movie idea of ’The Man Who Laughs,’” Reeves said.

“He (Veidt’s character) can never stop smiling. And that made Mike (Marino, the makeup artist) and I think, ‘I was talking about The Elephant Man, because I love David Lynch.’ And I said, ‘Well, maybe there’s something here that’s not something he fell into, in a vat of chemicals; or is it not (Christopher) Nolan, where he has these scars and we don’t know where they come from, ” continued explaining Matt Reeves.

“What if this is something that has touched him since he was born and he has a congenital disease that makes him refuse to stop smiling? And he’s had this very dark reaction and he’s had to spend a lifetime of people looking at him a certain way and he knows how to get inside your head.”

In closing, Reeves mentioned how Barry Keoghan’s Joker would truly become such: “Life has been a cruel joke for him. And this is his answer, and he will eventually declare himself a clown. He will declare himself as the Joker. That was the idea”.
