Paulina Bazán (24 years old) is one of the Peruvian actresses with the greatest projection in the world of cinema, theater and television. She delights us daily in Latina with her interpretation of Stephanie Quiroz in 'Papá en apuros', and in a few more weeks we will see her as Camila Gallardo in one of the most anticipated series of the year, 'Pituca sin lucas'.
She spoke with La República and revealed details about the harsh reality that the acting world in Peru faces regarding the salary disparity between actors and actresses. She also shared hidden aspects of her life, such as how a message on Instagram helped her enter the world of television, enduring 'no's at castings, and what she did with her first big salary as an actress.
YOU CAN SEE: Paulina Bazán in 'Dad in trouble': how old is she and what difficult career did she study at PUCP?
— Have you felt discriminated against in the world of acting because you are a woman or because of your youth?
—Many have the conception that men are better leaders, that they have greater decision-making power. But luckily, it has never happened to me.
— Do actors earn much more than actresses in Peru?
—Look, in my case I have been lucky enough to fall into projects in which everything has been very transparent, especially because they have been independent. But that is my reality, it is my bubble of luck. But I know that there are cases of girls, that I know, who have had to say: “Hey, why am I working more on this project? Why am I doing more? And that person who has more followers or is a man, Or he has a little more time doing television, but he does the same job as me, he is earning more, right?” And it happens in everything, ah, in theater, in cinema, on TV. The good thing is that people are no longer staying silent, even with the risk of being kicked out of the project for complaining.

— If something like this happened to you, how would you react?
— Yes, it's because you are in the same conditions as me, because of course, on television the years you have been there, the number of soap operas you have been in, etc. weigh a lot. So someone who has more years on television, but does fewer scenes than me, earns more, okay, I get it, they are the pre-established rules in this world. But if it were different, well, I would try not to make a fuss, to begin with, but yes, well, I would sit down and talk to the right person to question why this happens and wait for a concrete answer that convinces me.
— How are the recordings going in the series 'Pituca sin lucas'?
— Very good, really. This time it's different because we're going to be much closer to the air compared to 'Dad in Trouble', which we had a few months to record before it was even announced. Now everything is running much faster. We're already into a month of recordings.
— And how did you get into 'Pituca sin lucas'?
—This time it was a bit coincidental. I have my public Instagram profile where I indicate that I am an actress. Then, one day, the casting manager, whose name is Carla Quispe, who has already done other television productions before, wrote to me on Instagram.
— What did he say?
— Luckily, I checked my request tray and I had her message for a project, not this one ('Pituca sin Lucas'), it was a project from Channel 4, a unitary project. Unitarian we call these that are like 'The Rose of Guadalupe', 'Miracles of the Rose', 'Miracles, only Miracles', etc. So he wanted to cast me for one of those productions, we met, I went to the casting and I had the lead role in an episode. From there, she had me in her file, and from then on we kept in touch a little, for castings of that type, until she moved to Channel 2. I had no idea, and she wrote me on WhatsApp : “Hey Paulina, are you free from month to month? Do we have this project?” She didn't tell me her name, she didn't tell me anything. “Are you free? Well, come cast Latina.” And well, that's how my adventure on that channel began. I did my casting, like anyone else. The beauty of this novel is that everyone is casting.
— So, thanks to your Instagram you are on television
Yes, well, I mean that was like the stroke of luck I needed, because yes, I mean, I've spent years casting. Of ten castings you do, nine are no, and one is a yes. So, that's how I've gotten all my projects, but of course, that's the little bit of luck I needed, being seen on Instagram.
—The 'no' that has hurt you the most?
— It was when 'Back to the neighborhood' (America TV series) began. I went to Pachacamac and everything, but they never called me. Although I also already learned, it is something that we have to learn as we go and we should not take it personally, because it may be that they really don't like how you act, but in most cases they are minutiae, that is, they wanted the character to be a little taller, a little more, I don't know, that they have eyes like that, or that they fit better with the protagonist, physically.
YOU CAN SEE: This is the cast of 'Pituca without Lucas', the series that will replace 'Dad in trouble' in Latina
— Do you watch the ratings of 'Dad in Trouble' every day?
— Well, I think that at the beginning we were very aware of the rating, because I think that we all carried the project on the shoulders of the 'Dad in Trouble' project. We knew what to do, that series was a risk. Latina hasn't made fiction for a long time, the audience for Peruvian soap operas is already well established on a channel, right? Which is the one that has been producing national fiction for years, which is doing very well, so it was like facing David and Goliath. So there was a little anxiety about the rating in the first weeks.
— Do you still maintain communication with your partner Adriana Campos Salazar (Bárbara in 'Dad in trouble')?
– Of course. Adriana and I have become great friends with Matilde, we have made a very nice group there.
—Will she be part of the cast of 'At the bottom there is room'?
— Well, I think people are more lively than she and I combined, so everyone more or less smells it, and I, well, very happy for her. He deserves it, and the truth is that that is the idea, I think, for us actors, that we can move from production company to production company, from channel to channel, so there is work for everyone, and it is not just a monopoly.

YOU CAN SEE: 'Dad in trouble', cast: which actors and characters are part of Latina's successful novel?
— Speaking of 'AFHS', do you watch the América TV series?
— I had my album of figurines of 'At the bottom there is a place', when I was 8 years old, later I couldn't keep track of it, but when I was a child I loved it, and that's why when I started working with Joaquín Escobar, Bruno Odar , now with Kukuli Morante, for me he was like the stars on television that I saw when I was little.
— Is 'Pituca sin lucas' a story similar to that of 'At the bottom there is room'?
— Well, 'At the bottom there is room' has gone through so many moments and it is a story of those above and those below, right? It is a type of plot that has expanded a lot in our country and in Latin America. I mean, it's like a formula that works a lot, because in the end people identify, we laugh at our shortcomings as a society, at our differences, so that's why it connects people. In 'Pituca sin lucas' it focuses particularly on the love story between the main characters, so it has another focus, it has another way of seeing the story.
— What did you do with the first big salary you received as an actress?
— Yes, I paid for college with my first salary, just like it was when I was 17 for a movie. Because before that I didn't have a salary as such, because I had recorded short films where I earned 300 soles a day. That was going away in a couple of days, but when I received my first salary, I paid my monthly tuition at the PUCP (I studied theater at the Faculty of Performing Arts) and that was where I said that this can happen. function.
— What is your dream?
— I want to win an Oscar award. Also, being part of stratospheric productions from Hollywood or Europe and doing a series on HBO.
