With more than 36% of the votes, the slate led by criminalist Patricia Vanzolini won the elections for the presidency of the Brazilian Bar Association of São Paulo (OAB-SP), on Thursday (25). She will be the first woman to chair the organization in 90 years, after 22 men in office. In addition to the obvious evidence that there are more women occupying traditionally male positions in all spheres of society, election has a fundamental aspect that goes beyond the gender issue. Patricia Vanzolini’s agenda is in line with current times. She is not just a charismatic teacher who became known for working in preparatory courses for the Bar Exam or participating in TV Justice programs. Your proposal is to create a new order. It is not by chance that the winning ticket is called Muda OAB/SP.
Judging by the first interviews after the victory, in which she cited the “break of the paradigm” for being a woman, Patricia reaffirmed the commitments that can really change the Bar Association. “The OAB-SP has to be an example of gender parity, racial equity, inclusion of people with disabilities and LGTBQIA+ people”, he said to the website Consultor Jurídico. It was not without time. In addition to just taking a woman to the presidency, the OAB-SP had only one black president, Benedito Galvão, who was not elected to the position. He occupied the chair from 1940-41 during the removal of Noé Azevedo (who had the longest term in the body, from 1939 to 1965). And even so, Galvão was only recognized with “presidential honors” in a posthumous tribute, on July 15, 1943. Since then, no black people.
That’s why it makes perfect sense that Patricia, granddaughter of scientist and composer Paulo Vanzolini (1924-2013), who immortalized in one of her songs the lines “get up, shake off the dust and turn around”, is committed to “ modernize” the entity that will preside, as she herself stated. One of the proposals is to place the OAB in the development objectives and standards of ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance in free translation of the acronym in English).
And the same goes not only for the OAB but also for the training of new lawyers. “We are going to make a training and qualification plan with the new ESA (Superior School of Advocacy)”, said Patricia. “We need to make these young lawyers open up new job markets and develop their skills and talents. And, on the other hand, complement any training deficiencies”. It may have taken a while, but with a woman in the presidency, maybe Brazil has the chance to train generations of lawyers capable of giving the Law an adequate dimension for current and future times.
