Since the beginning of the pandemic, last March, lThe mask has become a mandatory complement to leave the house -or even within our home with non-partners. There has also been a lot of emphasis on the types of masks: surgical, hygienic and FFP2, which are the most recommended thanks to their greater protection against COVID-19. Especially for adults, thanks to the type of filtration they use.
However, FFP2s are not recommended for everyone, including children. This type of mask does not comply with European regulations, as indicated the spanish company Firstpotect it’s a statement. It is a company that analyzes the different models of mask for children that exist on the market. In his studies, he concludes that FFP2 are not recommended for the little ones and is that, even if they bear the seal of the European Union, they do not show adequate protection.
Same certificate as adult masks
“It is practically impossible for a mask with the size of a child to exceed European regulations”, experts indicate, also stressing that, in addition to the size of this type of mask, it is important to take into account the carbon dioxide content that is concentrated in the free space between the face and the mask. And it is that this concentration should not exceed 1% of the volume. The company, based in Galicia, indicates that the FFP2 children’s masks They have the CE certificate since it is the same one used for the adult model.
“The approval granted is for a single model and size and all the tests to pass the CE tests are carried out with that specific model and size. In order to sell the children’s ones, they use the same certificate, but the child-sized ones do not perform any type of test then they print the reference that appears in the adult CE certificate with the rest of the data required by law, which makes it very difficult to verify their authenticity since they have a ‘real’ certificate ”, the Galician company indicates in its statement.
The most recommended masks for children
Given the Firstprotect warning about FFP2 children’s masks, the company recommends that the little ones preferably use surgical masks under the UNE0064 standard, reusable hygienic UNE 0065 or IIR surgical masks. The latter offers up to 98% effectiveness, they are medical masks and they have a smaller size for children, 145×95 mm.
