In the absence of official confirmation, Ralf Rangnick will become Manchester United’s next interim manager following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The 63-year-old German is a very famous coach in his country and is considered the master of some great coaches today such as Jurgen Klopp. Let us know how his trajectory has been.
Before becoming a coach, Rangnick was a footballer. His career began in the lower categories of Stuttgart and debuting as a professional in 1979. His first big break came from Southwick and in the 1980/1981 season he returned to Germany in the ranks of VfR Heilbronn.
After combining the positions of player and coach, in 1988 he ended his time as a footballer at the Lippoldsweiler and focused solely on the benches.
As a coach he was in the lower categories of Stuttgart where he was also the youth coordinator, he has directed Hannover, which he promoted to the Bundesliga in 2002, Schalke with whom he won the German Cup and the Super Cup in 2011, or Hoffenheim and Leipzig, among others, with whom he also achieved promotion to the highest category of German football.
Before being promoted to the Red Bull team, in 2012 Salzburg signed him as sports director and in 2015 he would sit on the bench at Leipzig, which he made a reference team both in Germany and in Europe. Within the Red Bull group, Rangnick was global director of sports, and since last July he is the general director of sport and communication of Lokomotiv Moscow.
Rangnick is a coach with extensive experience both on the bench and in other facets of the sport.
One of the unknowns of the arrival of the German to Old Trafford is to see the reception that Cristiano Ronaldo gives him, because in 2016 he said in an interview that he would not sign Cristiano or Leo Messi because of his age: “No. Absolutely not . We have a salary cap. And they are too old …. We have our own philosophy and it would not work, “he said when he was on the Leipzig bench.
Five years after those statements, Rangnick will have under his command a 36-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.
In terms of his philosophy and his style of play, Rangnick tries to instill four fundamental aspects in his teams: speed in attack, set pieces, transitions and pressure after loss. We’ll see if he can also make his mark on United.
