The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the beginning of the final stage of consideration of the Russian vaccine against coronavirus “Sputnik V”. This was announced by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), it says on the drug’s Twitter account.
“WHO has confirmed that the approval process for Sputnik V is ongoing and is entering its final stages,” it says. It is noted that a group of inspectors of the organization is to visit Russia soon to collect the necessary data on the vaccine.
The last obstacle for the WHO to approve the Russian vaccine is the complete package of documents for the drug. Papers that are asked to provide should describe such parameters of the vaccine as its quality, safety and efficacy.
On October 12, WHO said it could approve Sputnik V by the end of the year if the necessary legal documents are signed in the coming days. Sumiya Swaminathan, Senior Researcher at WHO, spoke about this. She noted that the exact dates of the inspections are still unknown. At the same time, the WHO recognized “Sputnik V” as a very good vaccine. According to Swaminathan, this is indicated by the data on the effectiveness of the drug.
The head of the laboratory of mechanisms of population variability of pathogenic microorganisms at the Gamaleya Center, Vladimir Gushchin, expressed hope that Sputnik V would be registered with WHO by the end of November. “Colleagues from RDIF, who are working on the international agenda, are quite active in this direction. I think that this will be resolved in the near future, ”he said.
On October 7, it became known that more than 50 percent of Sputnik V and Sputnik Light vaccines will be produced abroad by November. They plan to synthesize more than 100 million doses of the vaccine.
Currently “Sputnik V” is registered in 70 countries, the total population of which is about 4 billion people. The drug is manufactured by more than 20 companies in 14 countries around the world. In Russia, the vaccine efficiency of the Gamaleya Center was 97.6 percent. The drug was 83.1 percent effective against the delta strain.
More than 51 million people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Russia. On October 20, President Vladimir Putin called on the heads of the regions to actively increase the rate of vaccination, and the citizens themselves – to be vaccinated. “It’s about your protection, your safety, life in the end,” he said at a meeting with members of the government. At the same time, the Russian leader noted that even among his entourage, friends and relatives are having strange conversations about vaccination. “I do not understand what’s going on”, – said he noted that Russia has a reliable, effective vaccine. “We have only two ways to get through this period – to get sick or get vaccinated. Better to be vaccinated. Why wait for the disease and its severe consequences? ”Putin summed up.
