Scientists have gathered solid data that confirm the existence of a hybrid variant of SARS-CoV-2 that combines the Delta and Omicron strains. Virologists at L’Institut Pasteur, in Paris, on Tuesday submitted data from the complete genomic sequence of ‘Deltacron’ to the international Covid-19 database, GISAID. This means that ‘Deltacron’ has been officially confirmed as a variant.
A case of ‘Deltacron’ has been detected in Soissons, in northern France, and cases of this strain are suspected in Denmark and the Netherlands.

The prospect of a variant combining two of the most contagious strains of the coronavirus may seem worrisome, however, scientists say there is no reason to be alarmed. There is sufficient immunity against both variants at this point, which is why ‘Deltacron’ should not pose a threat to the effectiveness of the vaccines.
Furthermore, the case of ‘Deltacron’ detected in Soissons dates from January. If this were a highly transmissible variant, it would already have propagated exponentially, which it did not.
Sources from the UK Health Security Agency, quoted by the website iNews, indicate that this hybrid variant is not linked to the increase in cases and hospitalizations recorded in the UK last week.
Maria van Kerkhove, the head of Covid-19 management at the World Health Organization (WHO), has already said via Twitter that the combination of variants was something that was “expected, especially given the intense circulation of Ômicron and Delta” and highlighted that his team is “monitoring and debating” ‘Deltacron’.
