In particular, according to Gebreyesus, the omicron strain is transmitted much more actively than the delta virus strain. The representative of the organization also confirmed that the virus is dangerous, including for those vaccinated and recovered from COVID-19.
The WHO Director General noted that the number of deaths from complications of the disease caused by the coronavirus in 2021 exceeded 3.3 million people. He stressed that in 2020, fewer people died from tuberculosis, malaria and HIV in total.
Earlier, Moderna disclosed the timing of the start of trials of a special vaccine against the omicron strain. According to the announced plans, the company will begin clinical testing of the drug in early 2022. At the same time, before clinical testing of the special vaccine, Moderna recommended combating the new strain of coronavirus infection with a third vaccination with its drug.
