Every year, many people in North Rhine-Westphalia also hope for a white Christmas. How will the weather be on the holidays – and where could it snow?
Düsseldorf – Look out of the window on Christmas Eve and the landscape, houses and streets are covered by a white blanket of snow for Christmas? At least in NRW people have to remember a few years back to find a white Christmas. In 2010, eleven years ago, it last snowed on the holidays. But what are the chances of a white Christmas in NRW this year?
Christmas in NRW: The weather turns into a “Christmas thriller”
Four days before Christmas Eve, the only thing that is clear is that a lot is still unclear. The reason for this is a so-called air mass limit, which is said to be in the middle of Germany, especially on Christmas days. Then the mild, almost spring-like air from southern Europe meets the permafrost that is currently spreading in northern Europe and Scandinavia. Where these two extremes meet, this very air mass limit arises. And there could be everything from snow to freezing rain to rain with rather mild temperatures. In terms of weather, a real “Christmas thriller” could await us, like the experts from Wetter.com suspect.
White Christmas in NRW? Weather on Christmas Eve and the bank holidays
- Christmas Eve (December 24th): Dense clouds, occasional rain showers at 7 to 9 degrees
- Christmas Day (December 25th): Lots of rain at 4 to 6 degrees, especially in the central and southern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, further north there can be snow or freezing rain at cooler temperatures
- 2nd Christmas Day (December 26th): Lots of rain at 2 to 5 degrees, especially in the central and southern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, further north there can be snow or freezing rain at cooler temperatures
Snow at Christmas in NRW? Air mass limit is decisive
“Even today – four days before Christmas Eve – we don’t really know where it will snow and where we will have to spend the festival in the country again,” emphasizes the German weather service. According to current forecasts, the air mass limit is more likely to be in northern Germany, but it could also hit the northern part of North Rhine-Westphalia. “On the border with the cold air, especially in northern Germany we have permafrost, there can be intense snowfalls. Just south of it there is a zone where there could be several hours of freezing rain or freezing rain, ”explains Wetter.com-Meteorologist Paul Heger. In the south there is milder air again.
This phenomenon is unlikely to play a major role in NRW on Christmas Eve. The border is said to be far in the north of Germany. For North Rhine-Westphalia this means: probably 7 to 9 degrees, clouds and occasional rain to give away presents. On the 1st and 2nd public holidays it will be cooler and the air mass limit will also shift further south. According to the current status, it could snow in one or the other region on the holidays in the north of North Rhine-Westphalia. But the danger of freezing rain also remains. In the Rhineland, for example in Cologne or Dusseldorf, meteorologists have so far been expecting rain at 5 to 6 degrees. (bs) *24RHEIN is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
