The effects of Brazil’s Palmeiras’ defeat by England’s Chelsea in this year’s Club World Cup final are still being felt in the Americas.
Although the ‘verdao’ had a more than honorable presentation, the final score ended up highlighting the superiority that European football maintains over Latin American football. How many times and which clubs have managed to beat the hegemony of the Old Continent teams?
Brazil, ‘or country of soccer’
In the 17 editions of the modern Club World Cup, South American football has only triumphed in four. And, to be more precise, the only country that has provided champions has been Brazil, the five-time world champion at national team level.
In the year 2000, the champion was Corinthians. The team from São Paulo beat fellow Brazilian Vasco da Gama in the final.
In 2005, Sao Paulo beat Champions League champion Liverpool and won the global title.
For 2006, Internacional, from Porto Alegre, defeated Barcelona 1-0 in the final of the tournament.
In 2012, Corinthians was the winner again. For that opportunity, he beat Chelsea, from England, by the slightest difference.
Liga Universitaria de Quito, Santos FC, Gremio and Palmeiras have reached the final.
