Where was the State?

A collective trauma is very difficult to overcome. And the devastation of these days will remain in the collective memory for a long time. Impossible to hold back tears when you hear citizens wondering where the State was for three days, why the emergency system did not work properly and was not notified in advance when they already had official data from the State Meteorological Agency. I myself would perhaps be writing now with different feelings, if it had not been for the very correct decision of the mayor of Utiel who at 7:17 on Tuesday, October 29, decided to suspend classes in his municipality, thereby avoiding the displacement of students. , teaching staff and administration staff, including a very close relative. It is also fair to recognize the decision of my rector at the University of Valencia, decreeing the suspension of activities in the evening of Monday the 28th, thus reducing the mobility of students and teaching and service staff, many from the metropolitan area, and thus avoiding a number of misfortunes that fortunately have not occurred.

But when grief allows, it will be a time for reflection and it would be highly desirable that it be a time to review policies and begin a new time for agreements. Because things have not been going in the right direction in Spain for a long time. The democratic conversation has reached such a level of degradation that not only is it impossible to reach agreements between political actors, but the few institutional spaces available for this have been invalidated. There are no longer spaces of trust to reach strategic agreements.
