Following the guidelines of the PNRR, i hydrogen trains they will arrive on the Italian railway network starting from 11 regions, with high passenger traffic and with greater dependence on diesel trains on non-electrified lines. This is the start of this hydrogen revolution, immediately seeking to cut emissions on large numbers. In fact, we will start with Abruzzo, Calabria, Lombardy, Puglia, Sicily and Umbria. It will continue with Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Piedmont, Sardinia and Tuscany.
“In Italy, about a tenth of the railway networks are served by diesel trains and in some Italian regions trains have a high average age and should be replaced in the next few years, making this the right time to switch to hydrogen, particularly where the electrification of the lines is not technically feasible or competitive. The most advanced feasibility projects in Valcamonica (Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line) and Salento envisage the integrated experimentation of production, distribution and purchase of hydrogen trains. Since there are currently no hydrogen refueling stations for trains in Italy, we understand the absolute novelty and scope of the challenge. Adequate time and funding will be needed, especially from the state, however something is starting to move“, Reports Il Sole 24 Ore.
The results obtained from the first lines, and in this sense the realization of the works in Valcamonica, could act as a driving force for a major renewal of the Italian railway fabric, with hydrogen potentially at the basis of the creation of new entrepreneurial activities capable of providing work.
The list of sections was made known by the president of the Senate Public Works Commission, Mauro Coltorti (M5S), and can be integrated with the projects announced by the governors Solinas (Sardinia) and Cirio (Piedmont).
- Lombardia: Brescia-Iseo-Edolo (the most advanced, already under construction, and managed by FNM);
- Piedmont: Cuneo-Ventimiglia, Novara-Biella;
- Tuscany / Emilia: Faentina line (Florence-Faenza) and Lucca-Aulla;
- Puglia: Lecce-Gallipoli-Leuca;
- Umbria / Lazio / Abruzzo: Terni-Rieti – Sulmona;
- Calabria: Reggio Calabria-Catanzaro;
- Sicily: Syracuse-Modica, Modica-Gela, Gela-Canicattì, Lentini-Gela;
- Sardinia: potentially all lines as electrification has never been carried out; we will start with Alghero center-Alghero airport.
