Where Jannik Sinner lives and why he chose to leave Italy years ago
Jannik Sinner was born in San Candido (Bolzano, in Val Pusteria) but the residence of the Italian champion who triumphed at the 2024 Australian Open on Sunday (destroying Novak Djokovic's resistance in the semi-final and winning a legendary comeback final against the Russian Daniil Medvedev) he is abroad. The 22-year-old tennis player from South Tyrol has been living in Monte Carlo for about 3 years now.
The reason? “It's a professional choice, nothing else. In Monte Carlo you play outdoors all year round, all the top players are there, the courts are always available: it looks like a Master 1000. Who would I play with in Italy? And I have to think about training in the best way, otherwise I won't progress”, explained Jannik Sinner in a recent interview with Corriere della Sera.
In fact, several other champions of sport and world tennis in particular have their residence in Monte Carlo. For example, almost all the top 10 in the ATP ranking are in the Principality: from Novak Djokovic to Daniil Medvedev, passing through Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Jannik Sinner has made enormous sacrifices for the sport he loves. “I left home for tennis at 13. It gives me positive and negative emotions, joys and sorrows. He gives me everything. I reject the concept of being a company: my thought is not the turnover, it is never the money. If they were, I would always play, I would accept the performances, I wouldn't take breaks – the words in the interview given to Corsera in recent months – On the contrary, I am interested in eating well, sleeping the right hours, eating at home whenever I can, being ready on the pitch the next morning. Ready to improve. If I don't play the Master 1000 in Madrid or the Davis Cup, and I understand that the fans may be upset about it, it's because I'm in Monte Carlo working my ass off. My goal isn't to make money: it's to become the best version of me possible.”
Obviously in Monte Carlo he is subject to the tax regime of the Principality, which sometimes reopens old controversies about not having left his residence in our country and thus paying taxes in Italy. On this issue, in defense of Sinner, another legend of Italian tennis, Nicola Pietrangeli, had previously taken sides: “Did Jannik Sinner violate any laws by taking up residence in Monte Carlo? I don't think so. If I want to live in Canicattì or Finland, that's my business, as long as I respect the rules. And then if Italian taxes were fair in relation to the services that citizens receive in exchange no one would feel the need to go abroad. The truth is that Italy is a nation of envious people. I have lived in Monte Carlo for decades and I can assure you that taxes are paid here and they are high too. Then, however, no one comes to pay the bills in your pocket if you have a luxury car or a boat. Not like in Italy, where if you have a yacht you are looked at with suspicion and the tourist ports have been forced to close because those who could have left to Croatia”, the words of the two-time Roland Garros winner.
