Scotland and Ukraine should have faced each other on the date of March 24, but due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine everything has changed. Ukraine is experiencing moments of authentic terror while it has the entire country paralyzed. In the sports field, football has been one of the biggest victims since Austria and Wales will now have to wait to find out the rival with whom they will play to enter the World Cup.
The match was announced as suspended on March 8 at the request of the Ukrainian federation, with the support of Wales, Austria and of course Scotland, which was their rival.
“Following consultation with UEFA and the four member associations participating in Itinerary A of the European play-offs, it was unanimously agreed to accept this request in the interest of solidarity. The parties are evaluating the possibility of organizing alternative matches in the March period for the affected teams. Full information on the postponed fixtures will be published in due course and, once the details are finalized, the June window of the international calendar will be adjusted accordingly for the teams in question,” the statement explained.
This is why Wales and Austria are going to face each other, but they will have to wait to meet their rival. The draw will be held on April 1 and it is most likely that it will not be known if the winner between Austria and Wales will be whoever is or the winner between Scotland and Ukraine.
