Although it is a rare event, the heart can be subject to the formation of tumor masses. Briatore underwent the removal of a cardiac tumor.
In a video published on his social profiles, Flavio Briatore he said he only received the diagnosis ten years ago. Thanks to a normal check-up at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. The entrepreneur said he underwent surgery shortly afterwards, during which the tumor mass was completely removed. But what was it about?
Although it is a rare event, the Heart may be subject to the formation of tumor masses. Cardiac tumors, or cardiac neoplasms, can present different types, depending on their origin and the nature of the tumor cells involved.
It is best to separate primary cardiac tumors, i.e. when the heart is the site of origin, and secondary cardiac tumors, when the pathology is the result of metastasis from a tumor that arose in another organ. As with everyone, even cardiac ones can be benign or malignant. Flavio Briatore's was benign.
Excluding cases of metastases from other neoplasms, most primary cardiac tumors are benign (in approximately 80% of cases), malignant ones are quite rare. Such a tumor can affect several areas of cardiac tissue, including the valvular one, the connective one and the pericardium. Even among primary benign cardiac tumors there are various forms, including fibromas, hemangiomas, lipomas, but the most common is myxoma.
The myxoma accounts for approximately half of all primary benign cardiac tumors. It usually affects the left atrium of the heart and can reach considerable dimensions, up to 15 cm in diameter. This form of benign tumor mainly affects women between 40 and 60 years old. This tumor has an irregular appearance and a jelly-like consistency. Approximately 75% of cases have a “pedunculated” form, meaning it is attached to the heart wall and can therefore influence blood flow.
THE malignant primary cardiac tumors they are very rare. The most common, sarcoma, affects adults around the age of 45, while the other types are extremely rare. A heart tumor, in general, is already uncommon. According to estimates reported in the MSD Manual, it occurs in less than one case in 2,000. Metastatic tumors are much more common (even up to 40 times more).
The diagnosis is made through tools such as echocardiography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. THE associated symptoms to a heart tumor are often similar to those of other pathologies. In cases of cardiac myxoma, for example, possible symptoms include shortness of breath, fever, weight loss, or joint pain.
As for benign cardiac tumors, the main treatment is the removal of the tumor through surgery. In over 95% of cases, this intervention is conclusive, although further checks may be necessary in the following five-six years.
