The World Health Organization called the new corona mutant “Omicron”, describing it as “alarming” due to the high number of mutations in it, and its higher degree of infection compared to the previous mutant.
The World Health Organization raised eyebrows, after it revealed the name of the new mutant for “Covid-19”, according to the “Media ITE” website.
The source explained that the organization adopted, last May, the use of Greek characters to avoid linking the variables to the countries in which they appeared for the first time.
On the reason why the organization chose Omicron instead of “Nu”, Tarik Yasarevich, a spokesman for the organization, said: “It is very easy to confuse “Nu” with “NEW” (i.e. new).”
He added, “Xi was not used because it is a common family name,” noting that the World Health Organization is working to avoid “offending any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic group in naming viruses.”
