What will the story of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom be like? Nintendo has given us some clues and we have ordered them to try to shed light on the biggest enigmas of the long-awaited sequel to Breath of the Wild.
Nintendo wants to play with us, and has already shown us in several trailers since the announcement of the long-awaited Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which we already know will arrive on Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023. For those who were left wanting of more history after a Zelda: Breath of the Wild somewhat decaffeinated in this sense, those from Kyoto are giving us a host of riddles about the narrative puzzle of his next video game. Why does Link appear in such primitive clothing? What happened to Princess Zelda this time? Has Ganondorf resurfaced? What is that mysterious tribe that everyone is mentioning? Will the master sword return to prominence? Is all this related to the remote past of Hyrule?
Eiji Aonuma and his team want us to ask questions about the Tears of the Kingdom story, because it seems that (this time yes) we will have a strong presence of the plot, or at least more intense than in ZBOTW. And that excites me. So much so that I have begun to investigate to bring you closer to some of the most important mysteries of this installment. At the moment, the findings that I have made, far from spoiling anything (because Nintendo knows how to hide its secrets very well), encourage me to wait even more eagerly for the arrival of the launch, and that is that the little that has been offered so far in the trailer promises a lot. But it is already known that several minds are stronger than one, so I invite you to continue solving the enigma of the story of this sequel in the comments, because there are many things to analyze.
Are there two versions of Link?
Through the trailers we have been able to observe a most disconcerting detail, since Link is shown to us in what seem to be two radically different versions. One is the one we all know, with our hero dressed in the robe of the chosen one… but the other lets us see a character of primitive aesthetics, with loose hair, ancient clothes and very rudimentary equipment. They would differ above all in clothing, because both versions have the mysterious power of the arm. What connection is there then? Is one the Link from the past and the other from the present, or do they mark access to a dimension that we still don’t know about? Let us remember that the saga has played numerous times with various versions of Link, from Ocarina of Time (Child and Adult Link) to Twilight Princess (Wolf Link), so it would not be unreasonable for history to repeat itself.
The Zonnan Tribe
The new appearance of primitive Link is closely related to the Zonnan (Zonai) tribe, which according to the book “Creating a hero”, is a wild tribe from the Faron region, plagued by some very enigmatic ruins and buildings (such as towers) that are scattered throughout the Breath of the Wild map. This tribe is linked in some way to the sanctuaries and a water dragon (the symbol that appears in Tears of the Kingdom), but above all it is said about them that they were feared for possessing very powerful magic. These magical powers could correspond to those of the mysterious hand that appears in one of the trailers, which in turn could belong to that new character that I already told you about. The Zonnan disappeared thousands of years ago in legend, but no one knows how or why… Surely this game will clear up all doubts.
Hyrule of the past
After seeing the primitive Link and knowing about the reappearance of the Zonnan, everything seems to indicate that the plot of Tears of the Kingdom is going to take us to a very remote past in the history of Hyrule, before the Great Cataclysm occurred. . But you will ask: how is it possible, if this is a sequel to Breath of the Wild? Well, therein lies the question, and it is not yet possible to put together the narrative puzzle with the elements we have. But the fact that an ancient tribe has so much prominence is already telling us something about what we can expect. In addition, the game this time runs in the skies, and on that side it could have some sort of connection to the origin of the legend narrated in Skyward Sword, which said that the lands were raised by the goddess Hylia to save the population and prevent a great power from falling into the hands of evil.
Gannon’s return
Since the first trailer, we have seen Ganon return, or more specifically Ganondorf, which is his personified form. In fact, something that confirms this last point is that his clothes show the gerudo symbol. For those of you who don’t know, legend has it that this proud nation of women once saw the birth of a man every hundred years, and he was made king. That’s where Ganondorf comes from, who is said to have conspired to seize the power of Hyrule, until a hero arrived who thwarted his plans thanks to the master sword. In short, everything indicates that history will repeat itself in this installment, but first look at the kind of tunic that Ganondorf is wearing in the image above. Doesn’t that sound like anything to you? It looks a lot like the one Link also wears in his primitive form. This could be another indicator that we are talking about a very remote time, hidden for years under the lands of Hyrule.
Zelda’s Disappearance
In the first trailer, Princess Zelda enjoyed a prominent role. She appeared exploring some ruins with Link, but there came a point where the ground opened up and she fell hopelessly into the depths. It has been speculated that the reference to the “tears of the kingdom” in the title of this sequel could be due to her disappearance, and the truth is that in the rest of the trailers that have appeared we have not had a single image of her. What will have happened to her? It is one of the great mysteries of Tears of the Kingdom, and it occurs to me that this time she will not be prey to Ganon as usual, but would it be possible to control it for more exploratory gameplay in the subterranean reaches of Hyrule. This would have its logic, because in Breath of the Wild we saw how Zelda acquired a fairly important role as a researcher, something that could be used to tell us where that hypothetical kingdom above the skies comes from.
The prominence of the master sword
The master sword is one of the most iconic elements of The Legend of Zelda, and everything seems to indicate that its importance is going to be capitalized in Tears of the Kingdom. In the trailers we have seen that something has happened to this ancient weapon. We don’t know what, but it is clearly deteriorated, just like it happened in Breath of the Wild, it seems that due to the malice that has arisen after Ganon’s resurrection. Therefore, I have no doubt that our main objective will be to give him back his power, and from what has been shown, I believe that everything will have to do with the seven tears of light that, most likely, are hidden in those dungeons that we long for so much. So in a way, history repeats itself, as in the end it happens in the Zelda saga video games, with that sword that was created by the goddess Hylia to repel evil.
