The admission of these countries as candidates for the EU “confirms that the seizure of the CIS space [Comunidad de Estados Independientes, que agrupa a varias exrepúblicas soviéticas] is actively pursuing, in order to contain Russia,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajarova said in a statement.

The EU announced its decision on Thursday, four months after the start of the military offensive launched by Russia against Ukraine, which has among its objectives to end the rapprochement between kyiv and Western countries.
Maria Zajarova stated that the EU intends “to establish relations with its surrounding regions governed by the principle of master and slave”.
According to the spokeswoman, Brussels (headquarters of the EU Executive), resorts to “methods of political and economic blackmail” so that the candidate countries to join the EU adopt “illegitimate sanctions” against Russia.
“This aggressive approach by the European Union has the potential to create new divisions and new, much deeper crises in Europe,” he added.
a few hours before, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, had much more measured intentions about the candidacies of Ukraine and Moldova, assuring that it is “an internal matter of Europe”.
