Around 3 in the morning local, the Republican candidate, donald trumphas come out before his people to celebrate the already practically consummated victory in the elections to the White House. In a short speech, lasting about 25 minutes, the new president defined the provisional result as a “historic moment” and the beginning of a “golden era” for the North American country.
Although Trump has largely been able to return to the White House thanks to the Republican apparatus, in his speech he has barely made any reference to the party he leads. On the other hand, he has made several allusions to the MAGA movement, almost as if it were a change in the party’s nomenclature. “It’s a movement like no one has ever seen. The largest political movement this country has ever seen“, he pointed out.
The MAGA movement is the acronym of the campaign slogan that the magnate already used in his previous candidacies. Make America Great Again. This famous phrase, which is now impossible to disassociate from Trump, is actually not his. He was the president Reagan who used it for the first time in his 1980 campaign, at a difficult time for the United States economy.
For his part, Trump used it for the first time in 2011when his name began to be considered as a presidential candidate for the 2012 elections —finally, the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, lost to Barack Obama—. “I must leave all my options open because, above all, we must make America great again,” Trump declared in a statement in which he left the door open to a future in politics. Once Obama was victorious, Trump’s path was smoothed, and that same November he petitioned the Patent and Trademark Office of the United States to be able to use the motto exclusively.
However, the Make America Great Again now—or what it implies—is not the same as in previous elections. What was once a successful campaign slogan is now a kind of ideology or, as he defines, a movement. A movement that does not travel the same path as traditional American republicanism. We could define the MAGA movement as the name of the new political trend that will prevail within the republican party, characterized by the same hallmarks of Trump.
with this brand MAGATrump could aim to mark the path of the future Republican party even when he is no longer here and transmit his legacy to his successors, whether they are his own family descendants—some of whom already held political office in his previous term—or his new vice president, J.D. Vance.
